8.1. File management
8.1.1. Naming audio recordings
The Courier uses a DOS formatted PCMCIA hard-disk or flash card as the
recording medium. So that the recorded audio files can be recognised by a standard
PC, all files have a normal DOS 8 character filename with a three character
extension, e.g. RECA0001.WAV
So that you can instantly start recording the moment that the record switch is used,
the Courier automatically generates a filename for the recording which is displayed
in the lower right hand corner of the record screen. The first four characters can be
altered in the options and the last four characters are digits which Courier assigns
automatically and which increment every time the
Record , or Record Pause Mode
is entered.

There are two options that you can use so that you can customise the names of any
recordings that are made. The reason for this is that when the communications
software for Courier becomes available, you’ll be able to transfer audio files back
to your studio from a remote location. So, you can use the naming options to put
the “Initials” of the person that did the recording, together with a “Machine ID”, as
the first four characters of the filename. The Machine ID could be used to identify
the Courier, if you have a number of them, or could represent a particular location
of where you are carrying out the recording. When the clip is sent to the studio, the
studio will know who recorded the file and where it came from.
