Integrated safety relay option
TopCon power supplies are electrical power supplies with 3x400 VAC
input (USA version: 480 VAC) and a DC output in the power range
10 kW to 32 kW.
Condition for safety category 1:
The flow of energy must be “safely” disconnected.
The disconnection of the mains supply is complex as high powers are
switched, also the energy stored in the intermediate circuit is after the
disconnection point and it is therefore still possible to output energy at
the output.
Power circuit
An H-bridge comprising 4 transistors
-2-
is supplied via a mains filter,
rectifier and soft charging circuit
-1-.
Using the 4 transistors
-2-
a pulse-
width controlled AC voltage is generated that is present on the primary
side of the transformer
.
On the secondary side
-3-
this voltage is rectified and smoothed such
that the resulting DC voltage is present at the output terminals.

Overview of the power circuit.
Safety-related aspects
The overall system can only transmit power if there is an AC voltage
present on the transformer primary side. This is only the case if all four
transistors
-2-
are working correctly.
If a fault occurs on a transistor
– in general faulty transistors are short-
circuit
– it is no longer possible to transfer any energy to the secondary
side
-3-
.
For this reason the transistors
-2-
are prevented from switching by an
EMERGENCY STOP circuit. Using a positively-driven contact on a
safety relay, the supply to the four transistor driver
-2-
is interrupted. In
this way an immediate interruption in the flow of energy to the second-
ary section
-3-
is ensured.
