Connecting the Rest of Your System
Now that you ’ ve made you r M I D I connections between you r wo r kstation and the M R - R ack,
skip ahead to “ M aking A udio Connections ” late r in this chapte r .
Using the MR-Rack with a Stand-Alone Sequencer
Sequence r s p r ovide a means o f playing and/o r r eco r ding M I D I music ( including Gene r al
M I D I music ) . T he r e a r e essentially two physical types o f sequence r s. T he r e a r e sequence r
p r og r ams which r un on a pe r sonal compute r , and the r e a r e stand-alone boxes dedicated
solely to the j ob o f sequencing. T his set-up desc r ibes how to use a stand-alone sequence r
with the M R - R ack.

I f you ’ ve got a cont r olle r and a M I D I me r ge r , you can f ollow the inst r uctions in
“ Using the M R - R ack with a Compute r , Cont r olle r and M I D I M e r ge r ” late r in this
chapte r , by simply r eplacing any r e f e r ences to “ compute r ” with “ sequence r . ”
A sequence r is also likely to include a disk d r ive. O f ten, the d r ive can be used to a r chive the
memo r y contents o f exte r nal devices — such as the M R - R ack — th r ough the “ dumping ” o f
M I D I System Exclusive ( SysEx ) data. ( I f you ’ d like to know mo r e about SysEx, see the
Glossa r y and “ W hat I s M I D I ? ” in C h a p t er 9 . ) Consult you r sequence r ’ s manual to see i f
you r s can r eceive M I D I SysEx dumps — i f not, you can simply skip the M I D I connection
which would r un f r om the M R - R ack back to you r sequence r . C h a p t er 6 desc r ibes how to
pe r f o r m a SysEx dump.
