Now, computer and peripheral manufacturers can create a program
for each device to translate back and forth between that device’s
format and the standard format. Think of the standard as a universal
second language for all devices. Any device can convert data from
the universal language to its native language, process the data in its
space, and translate the results back to the universal format (space)—
ready for the next device.
To handle the translation process, you need a Color Management
System (CMS). This system is a combination of software which
handles the conversion and an International Color Consortium
(ICC) format color profile which maps the relationship between the
standard color space and a specific device’s color space.
In the past, CMSs such as Kodak and EFI were proprietary as well as
application and device specific. The system was restricted to the
color gamut of a specific device and the features of specific software.
Now, system level CMSs (with open architecture and device
independence) are available for the Macintosh environment through
Apple’s ColorSync and for PC Windows environments through
Image Color Matching (ICM).
Note:
To use one of these new CMSs, you must have an
application which supports it.
ColorSync provides color metric tags which indicate the current
color space in use to any application. It also provides public data
fields and private fields. While public ones have proscribed contents
sufficient for most user color matching requirements, the private
fields allow a profile creator to add desired information to take
advantage of features specific to their CMS device. These private
fields work only with that vendor’s CMS, without interfering with
other vendors systems.
To help you meet the CMS requirements, XANTÉ created a color
profile based on the ICC format for your controller. This profile
works with Apple’s CMS software, ColorSync 2.0.
