Network Masks
When you create a TCP/IP address file, it must include the IP
address, the broadcast address, and the network mask.
The network mask is created by using 255 for any network address
octets and by using 0 for any host ID octets (fig. 6.28).
On a class C network (the most common type), the network mask
would be
255.255.255.0.
On a class B network, the network mask would be
255.255.0.0.
On a class A network, the network mask would be
255.0.0.0.
Creating an Address File
When you create the address file, it must include the IP address, the
broadcast address, and the network mask. The IP and broadcast
addresses are covered earlier in the “Classes of Networks” section.
Network masks are covered in the previous section.
Use the following procedure to create the PostScript address file and
download it to your controller.
Note:
The sample file in step 3 of this procedure creates a class C
network address file. See “Classes of Networks” earlier in
this chapter to determine the class of your network.
1.
Make sure your controller and host are powered on and you are
at the DOS prompt.
2.
Open any DOS editor such as EDLIN.EXE or EDIT.EXE. See
the DOS documentation for using these editors.
