Logical volumes, folders, and shares are the logical components used to
interact with the data storage capacity provided by the nTier500.
Logical Volumes
RAID groups a set of physical drives together to create a virtual drive that
the operating system treats as a single physical drive. This virtual drive is
referred to as a logical volume.
The nTier500 ships with all of its drives pre-configured as a single RAID 6
logical volume formatted with the NTFS file system. In BlueScale, this type
of logical volume is referred to as a Network Attached Storage (NAS)
volume. The pre-configured NAS volume lets you put the nTier500 into
production immediately after you create NFS and/or CIFS folders.
If you want to install an application that requires an unformatted (RAW)
logical volume (for example, Microsoft Data Protection Manager), you can
delete or convert the existing NAS volume (see
Deleting a Logical Volume
on page 104
). After deleting the NAS volume, you can create an
unformatted volume that can be used for other purposes (see
Create a New
RAW (Unformatted) Volume on page 110
).
Notes:
Depending on the number of drives installed, you can define
both NAS and RAW volumes on the same nTier500.
DPM is no longer available for purchase with the nTier500.
Refer to Microsoft’s documentation for complete installation,
configuration, and use instructions (see
Microsoft Windows
Operating System and Software on page 14
).
