As required for your configuration, connect a physical storage device (a
tape library, a standalone tape drive, or to another nTier appliance for
the purposes of replication) to the appropriate port on the back of the
nTier500 using an interface cable from your network switch.
Note:
These connections require the appropriate optional cards to be
installed in the expansion slots.
Power On the nTier500
To power on the nTier500, use a stylus or other similar non-conductive
object, press the recessed power button on the front panel until the button’s
LED illuminates.

Fibre Channel
The Fibre Channel switch where the physical storage device is connected.
Ethernet (GigE or
10 GigE)
The Ethernet network switch. If you plan to replicate the data on your nTier500
to another nTier appliance over a GigE or 10 GigE network, connect both
appliances to the network switch using the appropriate port on each appliance.
SCSI bus
The SCSI connector on your physical SCSI device (for example, a tape library or
tape drive).
Important:
If you connect a SCSI device to the nTier500 while it is powered on,
you must reboot the nTier500 before the SCSI device will be recognized (see
Restart or Shut Down the nTier500 on page 93
).
Note:
The SCSI HBA is no longer available for purchase with a new nTier500. It
is only supported as a legacy device.
Caution
Do not use the power button to power off the nTier500 unless you are specifically
instructed to do so by Spectra Logic Technical Support. Instead, use the shutdown
procedure described in
Restart or Shut Down the nTier500 on page 93
.
