Chapter 7
Configuring Replication
This chapter describes configuring and using the Spectra nTier500’s data
replication feature the through the BlueScale web interface.
Note: All replication features and tasks described in this chapter use
the BlueScale web interface. This chapter does not cover
configuring replication through the Windows operating system
or any features that are available exclusively through Windows.

VERVIEW
Replication is often used as part of a disaster recovery plan.The Spectra
nTier500 uses the replication service that is part of the Microsoft
Distributed File System (DFS). DFS replication provides synchronous file-
level replication to create identical copies of the files selected for
replication on the local nTier500 and on a remote nTier (either another
nTier500 or an nTier700 appliance).
Note: Because DFS Replication only replicates a file after it is closed,
DFS Replication is not recommended for replicating database
files or any files that are held open for long periods of time.
DFS Replication uses a compression algorithm called remote differential
compression (RDC) to detect changes to data in existing replicated files,
including insertions and removals. It regularly replicates new files and
uses RDC on blocks at the file level, so that only the blocks in the file that
have changed are replicated, not the entire file.
