fuel storage only and gravity feed to the Forward Starboard and Forward Port fuel tanks
accordingly.
Fuel Return System
All Diesel engines return excess fuel not needed for combustion to a fuel tank. The
excess fuel from the Starboard engine and 12Kw Generator is always returned to the
Forward Starboard
fuel tank. The excess fuel from the Port engine and 20Kw
Generator is always returned to the
Forward Port
fuel tank. On the Engine Room
overhead are four valves; one valve on each of the fuel return lines. These valves
must
be opened
when the engines and Generators are operating.
Fuel Management
Current fuel consumption rate is available from the John Deere Diagnostic Gauge.
Consider the following when reviewing and planning fuels needs:
•
Estimate high
on fuel consumption until you know for sure.
•
At 6 kts. Fuel consumption is approximately 1.4 GPH (5.3 L); at 7 kts. It is
approximately 1.9 GPH (7.2 LPH) and at 8 kts it is approximately 2.8 GPH (10.6
LPH).
This estimate is for each engine.
•
If the 20Kw Generator is operating at full load running at 1800 rpm, add 1.70
GPH (6.5 LPH) and if the 12Kw Generator is operating at full load running at
1800 rpm, add 1.20 GPH (4.5 LPH).
•
Plan on 20%
reserve,
or a minimum of 100 gallons (378.5 L).
•
Develop a habit of recording and calculating fuel consumption
each time the
tanks are filled
. Refer to Appendix D – Fuel Log. This will provide not only fuel
consumption data, but indicate possible problems if fuel consumption is
abnormal.
Fuel Filter/Water Separator
The dual fuel/water separators (one for each engine) are located Forward in the Engine
Room, and are Racor Model 75/1000 MAX with a maximum flow rate of 120 GPH (454
LPH). The fuel filter elements are Racor Model 2040 PMOR (red in color), a 30 micron
filter rating. For proper service and maintenance, refer to Fuel System Basic Service and
Maintenance.
During normal operation of the propulsion engines, the temperature of the fuel in the
return line will be hotter than the fuel coming from the supply line. Over time, the
temperature of the fuel in the tank and air space in the tank above the fuel level will both
