Updating Microcode from FMR Cartridge (Library Models)
The cartridge must not be file protected.
|
Note: If updating microcode in a 3570 Model B02, B12 or B22 update the microcode in drive 2 before
|
updating drive 1. If you update drive 1 before drive 2, you may not be able to use this process to
|
update drive 2. Both tape drives in the 3570 must be at the same microcode level to operate
|
correctly.
If there is a mismatch in the microcode levels on tape drive 1 and tape drive 2, the microcode in tape
drive 2 cannot be updated using this process. Refer to “Updating Microcode in Drive 2 from FMR
Cartridge” on page PROC-45.
This procedure automatically updates the field microcode replacement (FMR) tape with the microcode
from the drive if that level of microcode is not already on the FMR tape. The device is then updated with
the microcode on the FMR tape.
1. Make a note of the library mode that the device is in. (Do this for both drives in a Model B02, B12 or
B22.) You will need to return the library to that mode when the call is complete. The mode of
operation can be determined by selecting the Show Status screen on the Operator Options Menu.
2. Select Set Library Mode from the Operator Options Menu.
3. If updating a Model B02, B12 or B22, select the drive number that you want to update.
4. From the Set Library Mode Menu, select Manual Mode. (If updating a Model B02 or B12 or B22,
repeat steps 1 thru 4 for both tape drives.)
Note: If you want to create an FMR tape from a scratch tape that will contain the microcode that is
active in the device, go to “Making FMR Tape from Scratch Tape—Library Models” on
page PROC-39.
5. Change to CE Mode and if updating a Model B02, B12 or B22, select the drive to be updated.
6. From the CE Options menu, select FMR TAPE.
7. From the CE FMR TAPE Menu, select UCODE UPDATE.
8. When LOAD FMR TAPE Menu prompts to load a tape, load a FMR cartridge into the priority slot.
9. Scroll down and select START on the LOAD FMR TAPE Menu.
10. When the cartridge is loaded and at ready point, press Enter and then select PROC LOAD TAPE.
11. When the SELECT EC LEVEL Menu is displayed, select the desired EC level. The microcode checks
to see if the FMR tape contains the microcode in the drive logic card, and if the tape does not contain
the EC level, it automatically copies the microcode to the FMR tape. After action is completed, good or
bad status will be displayed. If status is bad, retry with another cartridge or same cartridge.
Note: Do not cause the machine to power off or reset while microcode update is in process.
12. From the CE Action Success Menu select Unload Drive.
13. Power off and power on the device to activate the microcode.
14. If updating microcode in Model B02, B12 or B22, repeat this procedure for drive 1 after the update to
drive 2.
15. Record the EC level and link level of the microcode in “Microcode EC Level History Log” on
page PROC-47.
16. Save the FMR cartridge in a secure place.
17. When you have finished the call, return the library to the mode that it was in before you changed it.
