Updating Microcode from an AS/400

Microcode load for the 3570 tape drives directly attached to an AS/400 with the SCSI is obtained from the
AS/400 using the program temporary fix (PTF) process.

Note: If the Magstar MP Model B02 or B12 is in Split Configuration, microcode update is not supported

using the PTF process. The microcode must be updated according to the instructions in “Updating
Microcode from FMR Cartridge (Library Models)” on page PROC-42. If both drives in a Magstar
MP Model B02 or B12 are attached to the same AS/400 system (Base Configuration), both drives
will be updated with new microcode at the same time when the PTF is applied. Both tape drives
in the Magstar MP must be at the same microcode level for the library to operate correctly.

1. Determine if any PTFs are required for attachment of the Magstar MP 3570. The PTFs for all

supported AS/400 releases are listed in INFO APAR II10363. This info APAR contains the most
current PTF information for all supported releases and important information concerning the
attachment of the 3570 to the AS/400.

2. Notify the customer that a microcode load for the Magstar MP 3570 is available via a PTF.

3. The customer will apply the PTF.

4. Before the customer applies the PTF(s) and IPLs the input/output processor (IOP), verify that the

drive(s) in the 3570 are unloaded and not being used by the AS/400.

5. The PTFs can now be applied and the IOP can be IPLed. The IPL causes the 3570 microcode load to

proceed.

6. When the microcode load is complete, the drive performs a soft power-on reset (restarts the code).

Important

Wait at least 6 minutes (12 minutes for a Model B02 or B12) after the IOP has finished with its IML
before powering off or resetting the drive. If the drive is powered off or reset before the drive
completes its power-on sequence, the drive logic card may be damaged.

Note: If an error occurs, a message should be displayed that the error occurred. Whether successful

or not, the drive will be reset by the device microcode. To verify that the load occurred as
expected, refer to “Microcode EC Level History Log” on page PROC-47 to verify the level that
actually loaded.

7. If the load was successful, update the account FMR cartridge. See “Updating Microcode from FMR

Cartridge (Library Models)” on page PROC-42.
