Isolate Drive 1 or Drive 2 Communications Fault

If tape drive 1 cannot communicate with tape drive 2, or if the microcode installed in the tape drives are at
different EC levels, the status ACCESSING or XFERRING is never displayed on the bottom line of the
operator panel display when the library is powered up.

If the library is set to split configuration, another indication that the tape drive 1 cannot communicate with
tape drive 2 is the letter “N” or a blank space at the beginning of line 3 of the library operator panel
display.

Check the following:

1. Both power cords are plugged into the 3570 and into the AC power source.

2. Check that the drive features are set correctly. See “Set Drive Options—Library Models” on

page INST-45.

3. If the library operator panel displays “CODE LVL”, the microcode levels in the drives are not the same.

Update the microcode. See the procedures listed under step 8.

4. If the microcode EC levels for each of the tape drives can be read by the host and displayed, compare

the microcode levels for the tape drives. If they are different, update the microcode. See the
procedures listed in step 8.

5. The RS-422 cable which connects drive 1 to drive 2 is correctly plugged into the connectors on the

cooling packs. If you corrected the RS-422 cable, power the library off and back on to verify that the
cable fixed the problem.

6. The internal RS-422 cable is correctly plugged into the mother board on each of the drives. If you

corrected the RS-422 cable, power the library off and back on to verify that the cable fixed the
problem.

7. Run the RS-422 Wrap Test. See “RS-422 Port Wrap Test” on page PROC-89.

8. If the EC levels in the tape drives could not be verified, the microcode installed in drive 2 may be at a

different level than the level installed in tape drive 1. Update the microcode in the tape drives using
one of the following procedures:

9. If the problem is not corrected by any of the above actions, one of the drive logic cards (FID EA), or

one of the RS-422 cables (FID DE) may have failed.
