Working with Adapters
One of the PCI expansion slots contains an UltraSCSI adapter In
some models, one of the PCI expansion slots contains an Ethernet
adapter. One of the PCI expansion slots contains the SVGA video
adapter. The remaining slots are available for future expansion and
growth.
Plug and Play
Plug and Play is a technology designed to make expanding your
server easier. Plug and Play adapter support is built into the system
board in your server.
Plug and Play Adapters
Plug and Play adapters are easier to install and set up because they
are auto-configuring. This means that there are no jumpers or
switches to set.
A Plug and Play adapter comes with built-in identification and
configuration specifications set in memory on the adapter that
provides installation information to the server during startup. This
information is sensed by the input/output (I/O) bus and interpreted
by the server Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). The BIOS routines
then automatically configure the adapter around the resources
already in use by other devices.
Most adapters designed for PCI slots are Plug and Play devices.
However, many ISA adapters are not Plug and Play devices. These
adapters are discussed in “ISA Legacy Resources” on page 29.
Notes:
1. If a resource conflict arises after you install a Plug and Play
adapter, you might need to change the default resource settings
on the adapter. For more information, refer to the
documentation that comes with the adapter.
2. For a description of resource conflicts, see “Resolving
Configuration Conflicts” on page 30. For information about
handling resource conflicts, see “Troubleshooting” on page 161
and “Resolving Configuration Conflicts” on page 180.
