General Assembly Instructions
The following general instructions will help you care for your engine:
3 Component cleanliness — Areas of all components that come into contact with oil, fuel,
coolant, water and combustion air must be kept clean.
3 Components requiring special cleanliness (e.g. oil and fuel-carrying components) must
be cleaned with suitable cleaning procedures before assembly and then checked for
cleanliness and treated accordingly.
3 Component packaging must only be removed immediately before installation.
3 Elastomer components (e.g. rubber parts, etc.) must not be washed with diesel fuel,
solvents or cold cleaners.
Parts dirtied with oil and fuel must be cleaned immediately. The parts should be wiped with a
dry cloth.
Elastomer components such as engine mounts, damping elements, couplings and Vee-belts must
not be painted. They can only be installed after painting the engine or must be covered before
painting work is carried out.
3 Radial-lip shaft seals treated with oil by the manufacturer show definite signs of swelling
when delivered. They must, therefore, be cleaned (not washed) only with an abrasion-proof
paper towel before installation.
3 The surfaces of parts that slide against each other must be lubricated with engine oil
when installed, unless otherwise specified.
3 O-rings and surfaces moving against them during installation (bores and shafts) must be
coated with petroleum jelly, unless otherwise specified.
