Do not use force to press out paste that has set as this
could cause damage to the mixing tip and the Automix
Syringe.
u
For veneers: owing to the relatively short working time
of RelyX Universal (self-curing begins after 2 min), we
recommend cementing a maximum of 2 veneers at the
same time.
u
Seat the restoration and stabilize long enough for the
cement to set fully; see Times.
u
Remove and discard the used mixing tip after applica-
tion; the syringe closes itself with the built-in rotary
valve.
Removal of Excess
Notes on oxygen inhibition: As is the case with all compos-
ite materials, RelyX Universal is subject to oxygen inhibition,
i.e., the upper layer (about 50 µm) which is in contact with
atmospheric oxygen during the polymerization does not
harden. Leaving sufficient excess permits the removal
of the uncured layer during finishing/polishing without
leaving behind a deficit. Large excess quantities can be
removed more easily!
Options for Removing Excess
Removal of Excess for Best Aesthetic Results
u
Remove the excess before polymerization, e.g., using a
sponge pellet, while using a suitable instrument to hold
the restoration in place.
u
Cover the margins of the restoration with a glycerin gel
to prevent oxygen inhibition.
u
Immediately light-cure or wait for the self-curing to
finish (see Polymerization and Shaping).
Fast Removal of Excess
u
Use an appropriate instrument (e.g., scaler) to
remove excess cement after brief light exposure
(approximately 2–3 seconds with a conventional
polymerization device); clean the proximal areas in
particular without delay. Use a suitable instrument to
hold the restoration in position during this procedure.
u
The tack-curing time of 2–3 seconds for RelyX
Universal resin cement is significantly longer than for
RelyX Unicem or RelyX Ultimate.
u
The

light-
curing devices have a built-in tack-cure mode that
permits a controlled brief curing of 1 sec.
Polymerization and Finishing
u
The working time and setting time of RelyX Universal
(see Times) depend on the ambient and oral
temperature. The times shown are based on conditions
relevant for the dental practice. As is the case with
every composite cement, the setting of RelyX Universal
slows down significantly at room temperature.
u
RelyX Universal is a dual-curing cement and therefore
also sensitive to natural or artificial light. The working
time is significantly reduced during application under
operating lights!
u
We recommend light-curing the cement through the
restoration when doing ceramic and composite work.
Select the exposure times appropriate for the number
of surfaces (see Times). Recommended light-curing
devices: Elipar

curing devices.
u
Finish any remaining uneven areas on the edges of
restorations and polish the marginal area with diamond
devices, aluminum oxide coated discs (e.g., Sof-Lex
™
),
and diamond polishing paste.

Then check the occlusion.
mix Syringe and allows the paste to be extruded. Do not
press the plunger unless the mixing tip has been correctly
attached.
u
To extrude the paste, apply moderate centric force; do
not bend the plunger. Do not apply excessive force.
If extrusion force appears high, check to ensure that
an unused mixing tip has been attached and correctly
locked.
u
Extrude a small quantity of paste onto a pad so that the
base and catalyst pastes in the Automix Syringe are pre-
cisely mixed in equal amounts. Discard the paste which
has been squeezed out.
u
To avoid contamination of the Automix Syringe during
treatment, we recommend using the Automix Syringe
with a standard dental protective sleeve; see Cleaning
and Disinfection.
Cementing the Post
Do not use Lentulo spirals to insert the cement in the root
canal as this can excessively accelerate setting.
u
For application into the root canal, attach an elonga-
tion tip contained in the package (or a RelyX Unicem
Aplicap Elongation Tip) to the mixing tip until it locks
into place. Support the mixing tip to prevent any bend-
ing.
u
Insert the elongation tip as deeply as possible into the
root canal and apply RelyX Universal, beginning api-
cally. Keep the tip of the elongation tip immersed in the
cement and slowly move the elongation tip upwards as
the level of the paste rises.
u
Do not remove the elongation tip from the cement until
the root canal has been completely filled.
u
This so-called immersion filling should be carried out
slowly and take at least 5 sec to minimize the inclusion of
air bubbles.
u
Place the post in the root canal filled with cement; apply
moderate pressure to hold it in position. We recommend
rotating the post slightly during insertion to avoid the
inclusion of air bubbles.
u
Remove the excess of cement with a suitable instrument
or a cotton pellet.
u
Polymerize the cement through the post when using
translucent posts. The exposure time depends on the
translucency of the post being used; for RelyX Fiber Post,
it is 20 sec.
u
Remove and discard the used mixing tip with the RelyX
Elongation Tip or RelyX Unicem Aplicap Elongation Tip
after application; the syringe closes itself with the built-in
rotary valve.

Bridges
Application to Tooth or Restoration
Protect the working area from contamination with water,
blood, saliva and sulcus fluid during the application and
setting phase.
u
Wet the entire area of the cavity walls, the cavity floor,
and, if necessary, the surface of the restoration to be
cemented evenly with RelyX Universal.
− Keep the opening of the mixing tip immersed in the
material during the entire application to prevent the
inclusion of any air bubbles.
u
The paste requires a certain amount of time to flow
through the mixing tip. The flow rate cannot be acceler-
ated by increasing the pressure on the plunger.
u
As soon as the pressure on the plunger decreases,
the material flow stops, and the paste begins to set.
