Chapter 3.  Installing the Library

Choosing a Location for the Library

Choose a location that meets the following criteria.

Location

Rack Specifications

Use a standard 19-inch rack with a minimum of 2U (7 inches) clearance.

Note:

Select a rack location that can support the weight of the library.

• Single-drive unit with no media: 40 lbs (18 kg)
• Two-drive unit with no media: 43 lbs (20 kg)
Also be sure to allow for the weight of the media that will be 
imported into the library.

The library should be placed in an area with minimal sources of particulate 
contamination, such as frequently used doors and walkways, stacks of 
supplies that collect dust, printers, and smoke-filled rooms. Excessive dust 
and debris can damage tape drives and media.
