Introduction to home theater
Home theate r r efe r s to the use of multi p le
audio t r acks to c r eate a su rr ound sound effect,
making you feel like you’ r e in the middle of the
action o r conce r t. The su rr ound sound you get
f r om a home theate r system de p ends not only
on you r s p eake r setu p , but also on the sou r ce
and the sound settings of the r eceive r .
This r eceive r will automatically decode
multichannel Dolby Digital, DTS, o r Dolby
Su rr ound sou r ces acco r ding to you r s p eake r
setu p . In most cases, you won’t have to make
changes fo r r ealistic su rr ound sound, but
othe r p ossibilities (like listening to a CD with
multichannel su rr ound sound) a r e ex p lained in
Listening to your system on p age 33.
Listening to Surround Sound
With the following quick setu p guide, you
should have you r system hooked u p fo r
su rr ound sound in no time at all. In most
cases, you can sim p ly leave the r eceive r in the
default settings.
• Be su r e to com p lete all connections befo r e
connecting to an AC p owe r sou r ce.
1 Connect your TV and Blu-ray Disc player
or DVD player.

DVD p layer on p age 13 to do this. Fo r su rr ound
sound, you’ll want to hook u p using a digital
connection f r om the BD/DVD p laye r to the
r eceive r .
2 Connect your speakers and place them
for optimal surround sound.
See Connecting the s p eakers on p age 21.
Whe r e you p lace the s p eake r s will have a big
effect on the sound. Place you r s p eake r s as
shown below fo r the best su rr ound sound
effect. Also see Placing the s p eakers on
p age 23 fo r mo r e on this.
Important
• To connect the su rr ound back s p eake r s,
an additional am p lifie r is r equi r ed.
Connect the additional am p lifie r to the
PRE OUT SURROUND BACK
out p uts of
this unit and connect the su rr ound back
s p eake r s to the additional am p lifie r . Fo r
details, see Use the PRE OUT out p uts to
connect the surround back s p eakers on
p age 22.
3 Plug in and switch on the receiver, followed
by your BD/DVD player, subwoofer and TV.
Make su r e you’ve set the video in p ut on you r TV
to this r eceive r . Check the manual that came
with the TV if you don’t know how to do this.
4 Use the on-screen automatic MCACC
setup to set up your system.
