APPLIANCE TYPE
Ì
portable or handheld appliances,
Ì
heating and cooking appliances,
Ì
IT (information technology) equipment (EN60950),
Ì
extension
leads,
Ì
3-phase (Aus / NZ model only),
Ì
multibox (Aus / NZ model only),
Ì
mineral insulated heating elements (Aus / NZ model only),
Ì
RCD protected appliances (Aus / NZ model only).
Most electrical appliances belong to one of these above-mentioned types. The tests and
limits differ slightly depending on the specific regulation.
In general the following tests must be performed during an
in service
test:
Class I equipment:
Ì
visual
check,
Ì
earth bond resistance,
Ì
insulation
resistance,
Ì
functional
test.
Class II equipment:
Ì
visual
check,
Ì
insulation
resistance,
Ì
functional
test.
Notes:
Ì
For portable and handheld appliances the leakage (or touch leakage) limits are
stricter than for other types.
Ì
For IT equipment the earth bond resistance measurement is performed with low
current (100 mA) in order to avoid any damage to earth connections for EMC
(screening) purposes.
Ì
For cooking and heating appliances the leakage limit is set higher because some
leakage typically occurs in the heating elements. Therefore the substitute
leakage current measurement is performed instead of insulation resistance
measurement.
Ì
The IT equipment must conform to the EN60950 regulations. Otherwise the
equipment may be damaged during the insulation resistance measurement!
