9. Audio Mix Engine
AutoMix
AutoMix groups provide automatic level adjustment for any collection of mono and stereo sources. The feature is
ideal for balancing active and inactive microphones such as in a panel discussion, or creating an automated
voice-over.
For
sapphire
and
POWER CORE
, up to 4 independent AutoMix groups may be created.
crystal
and
sapphire
compact
support a single AutoMix group.
Within the AutoMix group, a Lawo algorithm monitors the signal power of each source, and then automatically
adjusts the mix levels accordingly. For example, in a panel discussion, AutoMix automatically reduces
unwanted ambient noise recorded through open guest microphones who are not speaking, while keeping the
overall volume of the mix at a constant level. This frees the operator to concentrate on other aspects of the audio
production.
Note that the AutoMix and de-esser processing share a common DSP module which is separate from the
dynamics DSP. Therefore, the de-esser/automix module must be enabled in the configuration in order to access
its parameters.
The following parameters are available for AutoMix:
·
DYN
- on/off for
all
dynamics sections: compressor, expander, gate and de-esser/automixing.
·
AMix
- on/off for AutoMixing. This adds the source to the AutoMix group.
·
Weight
- adjusts the priority of the source within the mix when multiple signals are present, and can be
adjusted from
+9
to
-9
. Sources with a higher weight value get priority in the mix; those with the same
weight are mixed equally; and those with a lower value get reduced priority. For example, in a panel
discussion, the host would normally lead the discussion and therefore requires a higher weight value
than that of the guests. Similarly, to create an automated voice-over, adjust the weight of the playout
material to a much lower value than that of the voice.
·
Speed
– the speed adjusts the "smoothness" of the AutoMix, and is set in milliseconds (ms). The
speed defines how quickly a signal returns to its normal mix level after its gain has been suppressed by
other AutoMix members. A short speed fades signals in and out quickly, but could result in "pumping" if
several guests are talking in parallel. A longer speed generates audible fades in and out, and simulates
a mix driven by a real operator.
Both
DYN
and
AMix
must
be enabled (red) for AutoMix to be active. If the master
DYN
button is not
enabled, then the
AMix
button is dim to indicate that AutoMix is not yet active.

Limiter
The limiter DSP module is separate from the dynamics module and can be configured for sources and summing
busses.

.
Press the
LIM
function button to adjust the limiter for the source or summing bus in access.
The following parameters are available:
·
LIM
- on/off for the limiter: red = on.
·
THRS
- threshold from -93dB to +27dB.
·
RLS -
release time from 10ms to 5000ms.
