GLOSSARY
Krogen 58’ Manual, Hull 58014
418
Converter –
As normally used in a marine application, a device that converts 12V DC
or 24V DC to 120V AC (also known as ‘Power Inverter’).
Current
–
The rate of flow of electricity or the movement rate of electrons along a
conductor. It is comparable to the flow of a stream of water. The unit of measure for
current is
ampere
.
Cycle –
In a battery,
one discharge
plus
one recharge
equals one cycle.
Direct Current (DC)
– Current that flows continuously in one direction such as that
from batteries, alternators, photovoltaics, chargers and DC generators. Does not vary with
time, creating a flat waveform.
Deck
- The portion of the boat that covers the hull.
Displacement –
Amount of water displaced by a vessel, which can be expressed either
as weight (of the vessel), or as volume (of the immersed portion of the vessel).
Displacement Length Ratio (D/L) –
The D/L gives you a number to determine
the relative heft of a vessel. The larger the number the greater the interior volume and
corresponding load carrying ability. The D/L ratio is equal to the displacement in long
tons (1 long ton is 2,240 lb.) divided by the cube of the loaded waterline length (LWL)
divided by 100.
Draft –
Also ‘draught’, the depth of water needed to float a vessel, measured from the
bottom of the keel to the water line.
Dinghy
- Small open boat used as a tender; sometimes used as a lifeboat.
Electrolysis –
The
production of chemical changes of the electrolyte by the passage of
current through an electrochemical cell.
Ferrule
- a metal ring, cap, or sleeve put around the end of a pole, shaft, handle, or the
like to reinforce, prevent splitting, or provide a strong connection. A short, sleeve like
fitting used in piping or tubing to provide a secure fit or connection
Fiberglass
- A woven mat or random fibers, usually impregnated with a synthetic resin
such as polyester or epoxy.
Fiddles
- A small rail on tables and counters used to keep objects from sliding off when
the vessel rolls and pitches.
Flybridge
- An elevated steering position located on top of the cabin of a powerboat.
