Centerfielder
The Balmar Centerfielder provides a centralized source of charging control for ship’s
service/house battery bank. The Centerfielder senses when only one engine is running. When the
second engine is started, the Centerfielder determines which Max Charge Regulator’s current
field is dominant, and will direct the dominant field current to both alternators. This provides
balanced charging and both alternators work together. The Centerfielder also ensures that both
alternators remain in operation should either Max Charge Regulator fail. The Centerfielder is
wired to the ship’s service/house battery bank. The alternators on each Generator charge the
Generator start batteries.
It is recommended that you read and become familiar with the organization, content, and format
of the “Installation/Operation Manual” for the Power First Dolphin 12V DC Battery Charger,
The Dolphin 24V DC charger, the BALMAR Regulators, and the Xantrex Inverter/Charger.
Digital Duo Charge
The Balmar Digital Duo Charge is installed between your vessel’s ship’s service/house battery
bank and the engine start battery bank. It allows the alternator and regulator to concentrate output
based on the ship’s service/house battery’s needs. When the Duo Charge senses charging voltage
at the ship’s service/house battery, it works like a DC-to-DC battery charger, providing up to 30
amps of regulated charging current to support the engine start battery bank. When connected
directly to ship’s service/house battery voltage, the Duo Charge will remain in a sleep mode
whenever input voltage remains below 26 volts. When voltage at the Input terminal exceeds that
voltage threshold, the Duo Charge will provide charging current to the engine start battery bank.
When used in this mode, the Duo Charge will require a nominal amount of current while asleep
(approximately 500mA).
Automatic Charging Relay
The Blue Sea Systems Automatic Charging Relay is installed between your vessel’s ship’s
service/house battery bank and the NAV./COM. battery bank. This allows the NAV./COM
battery bank to receive a charge from the Balmar Alternator while underway.
Battery Equalizer
The purpose of the Vanner Battery Equalizer, located in the Port side storage compartment on
the Flybridge, is to extract 12V DC service from the NAV./COM. battery bank for equipment
and accessories needing 12V DC, while electronically maintaining battery voltage balance
(equalization). This prevents overcharging and damage to the batteries.
