the first 50 to 100 hours, or 2 to 4 weeks, of operation, remove the zinc plugs from the
heat exchanger end caps (refer to page 15-6, John Deere “Operations and Service
Manual”) and inspect for corrosion to get an idea of rate of deterioration in sea water. To
determine rate of deterioration, refer to page 30-6 in John Deere “Operations and Service
Manual”. The zinc plugs
MUST BE
inspected every 250 hours.
Be particularly aware of zinc deterioration when arriving at a
new marina
or when a
new
boat
arrives at your anchorage or marina. Faulty electrical connections on the dock or
faulty grounding or bonding systems on nearby boats can significantly affect the rate of
zinc deterioration on your vessel.
Transmission Break-In
Change the oil within the
first 50 hours
of operation. There is
no oil filter
on the Twin
Disc MG5075A transmission.
Always remove and clean the suction strainer
located at
the bottom of the transmission (just above the drain plug, see Figure 2 in the Twin Disc
Operator’s Manual) at every oil change.
Only use oil recommended
on the Marine
Transmission Lubrication Plate on the transmission.
Diesel Fuel
Refer to the John Deere “Operator’s Manual”, page 10-1 for information on Diesel fuel
lubricity, sulfur content, and recommended cetane number.
Bio-Diesel
Bio-Diesel may be used
ONLY
if the fuel properties meet DIN 51606 or equivalent
specifications.
Engine Oil
Use the proper oil viscosity based on the
expected air temperature range
during the
period between oil changes. Refer to the John Deere “Operations and Service Manual”,
page 10-6. The oil capacity for the 6068TFM75 is 20.8 quarts (19.6 L).
Multi-viscosity Diesel engine oils are preferred.
CAUTION
The rate of zinc deterioration is affected by a number of factors, including faulty
electrical connections on the dock, faulty grounding or bonding systems on
neighboring boats, tidal movement, salinity and water temperature.
CAUTION
Multi-viscosity oils (i.e. 15W-40 etc.), automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and
synthetic oils ARE NOT APPROVED for use in Twin Disc Marine
Transmissions.
