Battery Operation
Before starting the propulsion engines, you must first turn
ON
the battery switch for each engine
located in the storage compartment under the settee, Starboard side in the Saloon. Before starting
either Generator, you must turn
ON
the battery switch for each Generator located in the Engine
Room on the Aft Bulkhead. Each Generator battery switch can be positioned to
‘OFF’, ‘ONE’,
‘TWO’
or
‘BOTH’
so that if the battery for a Generator is low or ‘dead’, the battery for the
other Generator can be used. Should this be needed, make sure the Generator with the ‘good’
battery is running before attempting to start the other Generator.
Before operation of any of the 12V DC or 24V DC accessories and equipment, you must first
turn
ON
the battery switch located on the 12V DC NAV./COM. Electronics Panel, the
24V DC NAV./COM. Electronics Panel, and the 24V DC Main Panel in the
Pilothouse. For details on switch selector settings, see Electrical System in this manual.
CAUTION
Batteries contain a sulfuric acid electrolyte, which is a
highly corrosive poison
and will
produce gas when recharged and
explode if ignited
.
When working with batteries, always
wear glasses and protective clothing
, have plenty of
ventilation
, remove your jewelry, and
use extreme caution
.
Do
not
allow battery electrolyte to mix with salt water. Even small quantities of this
combination will produce chlorine gas that
can be fatal
!
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for testing, jumping, installing, charging,
equalization and maintenance.
Using a booster battery
In the event you have a “dead” battery and need a “jump”, you should follow the procedure in
the “John Deere Operation and Service Manual”.
Emergency Parallel Switch
Your vessel is equipped with two parallel switches in the Engine Room on the Forward bulkhead
which
parallel
the
engine start batteries
with the
ship’s service/house batteries.
CAUTION
When conditions return to normal, position the parallel switch to its original setting.
CAUTION
To prevent overloading of the alternators, ship’s service/house batteries
should be fully charged before engaging parallel switches.
