Construction
General
The Krogen 58’ is strongly and intelligently constructed using hull and superstructure
molds from high-grade female tooling. There are just three major fiberglass parts – the
hull, the deck/superstructure, and the Flybridge/deckhouse top. This unitized construction
process requires complex tooling but results in a high degree of structural integrity and
lessens the number of joints and seams that could leak or squeak over time.
Design and construction of this vessel is guided by the American Boat & Yacht Council
(ABYC) “Standards and Recommended Practices for Small Craft”, and American Bureau
of Shipping (ABS) “Guide for Building & Classing Motor Pleasure Yachts”.
Kadey-Krogen has made certain that all workmanship is of the highest standard. The
timber employed is of excellent quality, free from knots, shakes, checks, or warps. All
fastenings and other hardware are of marine quality bronze, copper, Everdur bronze or
type 316L stainless steel throughout. Only approved marine type products are permitted
throughout the construction process. The best workmanship and materials are used.
Bulkheads
Watertight, structural marine grade plywood bulkheads, slotted to receive the continuous
stringers, are installed on foam cant strips to avoid direct contact with the hull. Designed
to eliminate potential hard spots, they are tabbed to the hull and fully encapsulated in
fiberglass.
Superstructure
The superstructure includes hand-laid Knytex® mat sandwich construction (in
combination with end-grain balsa and/or Divinycell® cores) and surface mats for print-
through reduction.
Above the waterline, the hull sides are cored with two layers of ¾” Airex® structural
foam, a time-consuming process that produces a strong, impact-resistant structure at
moderate weight. The superstructure is cored with Divinycell® foam for light weight and
stiffness. All this attention to structural detail reduces topside weight, enhances stability,
and moderates her motion in a seaway.
Structural foam core materials are used in part, because they best resist water absorption
and add acoustic and thermal insulation, making the Krogen 58’ more comfortable in all
weather and climate conditions. As a result, the yacht is quieter and easier to heat and
cool.
