Krogen 58’ Manual, Hull 58014
Propulsion System – Engines and Transmission
155
16.
Check
oil pressure gauge
as soon as engine starts. If gauge needle does not rise
above minimum oil pressure specification of 15.0 psi within five seconds, stop the
engine and determine the cause. Normal
engine oil pressure
is 50 psi at full load
speed of 1800-2500 rpm with oil at
normal operating temperature
of 240
º
F
(115
º
C).
17.
After engines oil pressure and operating temperature are in normal range,
check
oil level in each transmission
. Proper check of transmission can only be done
with engine running and transmission in neutral. Oil level should be at “FULL”
mark on gauge.
After starting
BOTH
engines and
before leaving the dock or anchorage
, you should
always
do the following:
1.
Start the 20Kw Generator to engage the PTO and hydraulic pump.
2.
Take
ALL
electric load off the 20Kw Generator to ensure maximum power will
be available when maneuvering.
3.
Turn
ON
both
circuit breakers for the Bow Thruster/Windlass
and
Stabilizers.
This is important so that you have control of the hydraulics before leaving the
dock or anchorage.
4.
Press the
START
button on the Bow Thruster Control Station (TCS) at the
attended station to activate the Bow Thruster jog lever.
5.
The TCS must be turned
ON
to operate the Windlass.
6.
Enable both Stabilizers on the Touchscreen Panel in the Pilothouse and
Center
the Stabilizer fins.
CAUTION
IMPORTANT: Avoid unnecessary engine idling. Prolonged idling may cause
the engine coolant temperature to fall BELOW its normal range. This causes
incomplete fuel combustion, which results in crankcase oil dilution, and permits
formation of gummy deposits on valves, pistons, and piston rings. It also
promotes rapid accumulation of engine sludge and unburned fuel in the exhaust
system. If engine must be left running more than 5 minutes, MINIMUM engine
speed should be 1200 rpm.
CAUTION
Engine exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide. Although colorless and odorless,
it is potentially lethal. Avoid inhaling engine exhaust gases.
DO NOT idle engine for other than warming up and cooling down when the
vessel is moored or docked.
CAUTION
Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when moving about the Engine Room with the
engine or generator operating. Rotating machinery is VERY DANGEROUS and
exhaust risers are VERY HOT.
