Propeller Shaft Assembly System
Shaft Seals
The Tides Marine STRONG® Self Aligning Shaft Seals installed on your Krogen 58’
offers several advantages over flax-packed stuffing boxes or other face sealing systems in
that they are 100% watertight, non corrosive, inert to electrolysis and
maintenance free .
The seal is connected to the vessels stern tube by means of special soft wall hose which
allows the unit to compensate for normal misalignment and movement of the shaft while
in use. A pressurized water connection from the raw water cooling circuit on the
propulsion engine and the water injection fitting on the seal is used to lubricate and cool
the propeller shaft with raw water. To prevent damage to the shaft seal, do not allow shaft
to free wheel without this cool, lubricating water flow. A crossover hose connects both
seals which will allow water to flow to both seals if only one engine is running. Refer to

The four blade bronze propellers on your Krogen 58’ have a 32” diameter and a 24”
pitch. The two propeller shafts counter rotate
outboard . When the Clutch Sender is in the
Forward position, the Starboard propeller rotates clockwise and the Port propeller rotates
counterclockwise. This means that when
backing down , if the Port Clutch Sender is in
Reverse and the Starboard Clutch Sender is in Neutral, the Stern will have a tendency to
move to Starboard . When the Starboard Clutch Sender is in Reverse and the Port Clutch
Sender is in Neutral, the Stern will have a tendency to move to Port .
