Rudder
- A flat, wide shape made of various materials, which is hung on the Stern and
used to steer the boat.
Rudder Post
- The shaft, which connects the rudder blade to the boat.
Running Lights
- Navigation lights on a vessel; the best way to determine another
vessel's size, type, and direction of travel at night.
Scantling
- The dimensions of the structural parts of a vessel. Often used in the plural.
Sea Rails
- Adjustable pot holders mounted on the sides of the range top used to keep
pans in place and prevent them from sliding off the range when the vessel rolls and
pitches.
Stem
- The timber at the extreme forward part of a boat secured to the forward end of
the keel

The forward or front end of a boat (also called 'Bow').
Stern
- The after part of the vessel (back of)

Superstructure
- the structural part of a ship above the main deck.
Thixotropy -
Is the opposite of isotropy in that the fluid mixture becomes more fluid
(less firm) as it is agitated. An example of this is where you strike the end of a ketchup
bottle to get ketchup to come out of the bottle. The striking force temporarily causes the
ketchup to become 'runny' and it flows more easily from the bottle. Another example is
the infamous "quicksand". If you 'thrash' around in the quicksand, you will sink
"quicker" because all that 'wiggling' causes the sand to liquefy.
Transformer
– An electrical device that has no moving parts and is designed to
convert alternating current (AC) from one voltage to another voltage. A transformer can
be designed to either ‘step up’ or ‘step down’ voltages and works on the magnetic
induction principle.
Volt –
The unit of measure for electric potential .
Watt –
The unit for measuring electrical power . The rate of doing work, in moving
electrons by or against an electric potential.
Wet Cell Battery –
Also called ‘lead-acid’ is any type of battery that uses liquid as an
electrolyte. AGM is one type of wet cell battery.
