Berth
- A place to sleep on a boat, a bed; also a location at a pier or float.
Bilge
- The very lowest accessible part of a boat's interior in the hull down next to the
keel.
Bow
- The forward or front end of a boat (also called 'Stem').
Bowsprit
- A spar extending forward from the stem.
Brightwork
- Today, usually refers to wooden surfaces that have many coats of
varnish resulting in a high gloss. Formerly, referred to metal parts or fixtures on a ship
that had a high brilliant gloss due to constant polishing by the crew.
Bulkhead
- An upright partition in a boat which divides the area into compartments or
cabins and helps prevent the spread of fire or flooding.
Bulwarks
- Planking or steal plating on the sides and above the upper Deck of a vessel
to prevent the seas washing Inboard or persons and/or Gear being washed overboard

Center of Buoyancy (B)
-
The center of buoyancy is the geometric centroid of the
submerged volume of the vessel; the total of all buoyant forces acting upon the vessel
may be considered to be concentrated here and acting upward thru it. The position of B
varies with vessel draft, trim, and heel.
Center of Gravity (G or cg)
-
The point thru which all the weights constituting the
vessel and its contents may be assumed to act; the weight of the vessel and its contents
may be considered to be concentrated here with the total of gravitational forces acting
downward thru it. The position of G varies with vessel loading.
Check Valve –
an inline flow control device with a built-in ‘poppet’ to restrict or stop
flow in one direction. When a fluid freely passes through the check valve, this is termed
‘free flow’. When the fluid flow reverses, the poppet is pushed into its seat, blocking or
‘checking’ the fluid flow in the reverse direction.
Circuit
–
An electric circuit is the path of an electric current. A
closed
circuit has a
complete path. An
open
circuit has a broken or disconnected path.
Coaming
- Raised edge around hatches to keep water out.
