Sanitary System
All vessels with fixed toilets in U.S. waters and in the waters of some countries are
required to be equipped with an operable marine sanitation device (MSD). The
VacuFlush® system on the Krogen 58’ meets the requirement of a Type III system as
defined by the U.S. Coast Guard. Type III systems are designed to permit operation of the
toilet
without
the direct discharge of untreated water after each flush. This means
onboard toilet facilities can be used when the boat is near swimmers, beaches, or shellfish
beds. Type III systems can be discharged at marina dockside using pump-out stations or
when more than three miles offshore (nine miles in the Gulf of Mexico).
The Krogen 58’ sanitary system will provide owners and guests with comfortable,
sanitary and odor free toilet service, and includes the storage and removal of waste
products. Each of the two Heads contain a sanitary subsystem consisting of a
VacuFlush® toilet Model 3409, which operates on a vacuum principle and a 24V DC
vacuum generator, Model VG24. The two subsystems are connected to the 100 gallon
(378 L) holding tank. The holding tank subsystem consists of a TankWatch® Level
Monitor System, located in the Pilothouse, a SeaLand® T-Series Holding Tank
Discharge Pump, Model T24, seacock for overboard discharge located in the Forward
Machinery Space under the holding tank, holding tank vent filter , dockside discharge
fitting and associated piping, clamps, switches and wiring. The Forward Machinery
Space is located under the hatch in the Master Stateroom. See Figure 20 for diagram of
Waste Water System.
The toilet system works on a vacuum principle. An electric pump creates a vacuum in the
vacuum tank (charges the tank) and also pumps waste to the holding tank. The pump and
vacuum tank together comprise the vacuum generator. The vacuum system is sealed at
one end by a ball valve located at the base of each toilet bowl and at the other end by a
“duck bill” type one-way rubber valve located at the vacuum pump. A sensor in the
vacuum tank senses if there is sufficient
negative
pressure in the tank (OK TO FLUSH,
Green light on Status Panel). If not (DO NOT FLUSH, Red light on Status Panel), the
vacuum pump will operate for about 60 seconds to charge the tank (create vacuum
pressure). When the toilet is flushed by pressing the OK TO FLUSH button, the ball seal
at the base of the toilet is opened, allowing the waste material to be “sucked” into the
vacuum tank and then pumped out to the holding tank. The pump then operates for about
60 seconds to recharge the vacuum tank.
Fresh water is used to flush the system. The fresh water system is connected to each
toilet. The VacuFlush® toilet is operated by a FLUSH button located on the front panel
of the sink in each Head. When the FLUSH button is pressed, the toilet bowl flush outlet
valve is opened to discharge the waste
and
the water supply valve is opened to rinse and
replenish the bowl with fresh water. Each flush consumes 1.5 pints (.7 L) of fresh water.
To add water to the bowl, press the ADD WATER switch until the desired water level is
