Bolts and Machine Screws
Bolts or machine screws are used where accessibility permits. The diameter of each
fastener is at least equal to the thickness of the thinner component being fastened.
Fasteners are spaced at a minimum of 3d center to center and are located at a distance
from the edges of the laminates not less than 3d where ‘d’ is the fastener diameter.
In way of bolts and machine screws, low-density (ineffective) core materials are replaced
with structurally effective inserts or effective coring.
Washers or backing plates are installed under all fastening heads and nuts that otherwise
would bear on laminates. Nuts are either of the self-locking type or other effective means
are provided to prevent backing off.
Care is taken to ensure that the bolts, nuts or other components into which the bolt is
fastened are of materials having similar mechanical properties, and are close on the
galvanic series to minimize corrosion potential.
Self-Tapping Screws
Self-tapping screws having straight shanks are used for lightly loaded connections where
lack of accessibility prohibits the use of through fastenings. Where used, self-tapping
screws have coarse threads.
Hull to Deck
Joints are lapped and bolted. Where flanges are used, the hull flanges are equal in
thickness to the hull laminates, and the deck flanges are equal in thickness to the deck
laminates. Faying surfaces are set in “3M 5200” Polyurethane Adhesive/Sealant.
