&
CAUTION
Although some vehicles are
fitted with a passenger air bag
deactivation feature which is
designed to turn off the passen
ger's frontal air bag under
certain conditions, no system is
fail-safe. No one can guarantee
that an air bag will not deploy
under some unusual circum
stance, even though the system
is deactivated.
It is therefore recommended
that a rear-facing child restraint
be secured in a vehicle with a
rear seat that accommodates
the restraint.
In fact, because the risk to a
rear-facing child is so great if
the air bag deploys, there is a
label on your vehicle's sun visor
that cautions you never to put a
rear-facing child seat in the
front.
&
CAUTION
If, however, you secure a
forward-facing child restraint in
the front passenger seat, be
sure to move the front passen
ger seat as far back as it will go.
When the vehicle is started with
a child restraint installed in the
front passenger seat, the "off"
indicator should appear in
the passenger air bag on/off
indicator (located on the
instrument panel) after the
system has completed its
self -check.
Section 2
&
CAUTION
(Continued)
If the "on" indicator appears
when you have installed a child
restraint in the front passenger
seat, it means that the front
passenger's air bag system is
still active.
See "Passenger Sensing System"
earlier in this section.
Many child restraints are too wide
to be properly secured in a centre
rear seat, although some will fit
there.
If a centre rear seat is too narrow
for your child restraint, secure it in
an outboard rear seat.
