&
CAUTION
The body structure of a young
child is different from an adult
or older child, for whom the
safety belts are designed.
A young child's hip bones are
still so small that the vehicle's
regular safety belt may not
remain low on the hip bones, as
it should. Instead, it may settle
up around the child's abdomen.
In a crash, the belt would apply
force on a body area that is
unprotected by any bony struc
ture. This alone could cause
serious or fatal injuries.
Young children should always
be secured in appropriate child
restraints.
These restraints use the safety belt
system in your vehicle, but the child
also has to be secured within the
restraint to help reduce the chance
of personal injury. Follow the
instructions that come with the
restraint.
&
CAUTION
Always ensure that the safety
belt fits firmly around the child
restraint.
&
CAUTION
If a child restraint is not proper
ly secured in the vehicle, the
restraint will not be able to
protect a child sitting there. In a
crash, the child could be seri
ously injured or killed.
Section 2
When you pull the shoulder
portion of the rear passenger lap/
shoulder belts all the way out, the
child restraint locking feature is
engaged. The belt can no longer
be pulled out until it is fully
retracted.
If you are using a vehicle safety
belt fitted with the child restraint
locking feature to secure the
restraint, be sure that after you
have routed the belt through the
restraint and have buckled the belt
that you pull the shoulder portion
all the way out of the retractor to
engage the belt lock. Then, feed
the shoulder belt back into the
retractor while pushing down on
the restraint.
Push and pull the child restraint in
different directions to make sure it
is secure.
