Communications - Interface and PC commands
8.1 Introduction
The CTR5000 is fitted with a USB communication interface as standard. The connected PC
must have the correct USB driver installed to use the interface (see section 9.2). Alternatively,
the CTR5000 may be fitted with an RS232 or LAN or IEEE interface.
The commands are buffered by the CTR5000 (saved in order of arrival) so more than one
command can be sent to the instrument without waiting for the previous one to complete.
However, to prevent unpredictable results, it is normally easier to wait for the expected
response before issuing the next one.
When an additional interface is fitted, it is possible to use both simultaneously. However,
unpredictable results may occur, depending on the exact timing and order of any input
commands.
8.2 Interfaces
The USB interface is fitted a standard. The (optional) IEEE or RS232 or LAN interfaces, while
using a completely different means of transporting data, work in the same way as far as the
command structure is concerned.
The specific difference between the data-transport methods are covered in the sections
below.
8.2.1
USB device driver
The USB PC interface will normally be installed as a virtual COM port driver (simulated serial
port).
An interval of 1ms to 2 ms should be allowed between transmitted characters.
