Turn up the brightness as far as it will go. When you look at the alignment tool directly
(not through the eyepiece), you should see a pool of white light from the illuminator on
the surface of the tool.
Continue looking at the alignment tool directly while using the joystick on the stage
controller to roughly position the opening in the surface of the alignment tool under the
white light.
Look through the eyepiece and adjust the brightness to eliminate all glare.
Continue looking through the eyepiece while using the focus knob on the stage controller
to focus on the metal surface of the alignment tool (clockwise knob rotation moves the
stage up).
You should see the edge of the opening in the alignment tool through the eyepiece. The
pinhole is located on a substrate mounted inside the alignment tool. The substrate is
visible through the opening as shown below.

If you don’t see the opening in the alignment tool through the eyepiece, use the joystick to
adjust the X or Y position of the stage until the opening comes into view.
7. Focus on the substrate.
Use the focus control to bring the substrate into focus, adjusting the brightness to
optimize the image contrast. You should see the texture of the substrate; the presence of
dark spots and streaks is normal. You may or may not see the pinhole at this point.
Tip
Hold down the button to the left of the joystick to speed up the X- and Y-axis
stage movement.
Tip Hold down the button to the right of the joystick to speed up the Z-axis stage
movement.
