Operation
Tyres and wheels
!
Store tyres in a cool, dry place, preferably in
the dark. Protect the tyres from oil, grease, pet-
rol and diesel fuel.
Do not clean your wheels with acidic wheel
cleaners since these could corrode the heads
of wheel bolts.
Tyres with a specified direction of rotation
have additional benefits, e.g. if aquaplan-
ing occurs. These advantages can only be
enjoyed if the tyres are fitted correspond-
ing to the direction of rotation.
An arrow on the sidewall of the tyre indi-
cates its correct direction of rotation.
i
You may fit a spare tyre* against the direc-
tion of rotation.
The MO
Extended
emergency running sys-
tem enables you to continue driving the ve-
hicle even when all air is lost from one or
more tyres.
You may only use the MO
Extended
run-flat
system in conjunction with the tyre pres-
sure loss warning system or the tyre pres-
sure monitor*.
You will find notes on driving with a flat
tyre in the Practical advice section
( page 492).
Only correct tyre pressures when the tyres
are cold.
The pressure of warm tyres should only be
corrected if it is too low for the current
operating conditions. Warm tyres always
have higher pressures than cold ones.
You will find a table of tyre pressures for
different operating conditions on the in-
side of your vehicle’s fuel filler flap.
i
Tyre pressure values given for low loads are
minimum values which offer you good ride com-
fort characteristics.
You can, however, also use the values for higher
loads. These are permissible and will not ad-
versely affect the running of the vehicle. Howev-
er, ride comfort will be impaired to some degree.
Also check the tyre pressure of the spare
wheel*.

Tyre tread
G
Risk of accident
Please keep in mind that:
tyre grip decreases rapidly on wet roads
when the tread depth is less than 3 mm.
You should thus replace tyres that have
insufficient tread.
Winter tyres should be replaced when
the tread depth is 4 mm or less because
otherwise they no longer provide ade-
quate grip.
tyres can be subject to different levels of
wear. You should thus regularly check
the tread depth and the condition of the
tread across the entire width of all tyres.
If necessary, turn the steering wheel so
that you can see the tyre tread more
easily.
You could otherwise lose control of the vehi-
cle and cause an accident due to the re-
duced grip of the tyres on the road.

G
Risk of accident
If the pressure in a tyre drops repeatedly, in-
spect the tyre for foreign objects and check
whether the tyre or valve are leaking.
