– air bag modules in the front
seats;
– seat belts with pretensioner and
load limiter;
– rotating device mounted on the
connector of understeering switch
(for connecting horn switch and air
bag module to the vehicle circuit);
– ABS control and diagnostic unit
mounted on the tunnel of the body
floor under the console of instrument
panel;
– ABS diagnostics LED in the in-
strument cluster.
Air bags are an additional means
of protection to the driver and the
front passenger fastened with seat
belts; they actuate in a severe frontal
or side crash:
– starting with specific severity of
crash;
– in coverage areas shown in
Figure 17a (highlighted).
ABS must actuate in case of
severe frontal impacts and side
crash. However, ABS may also actu-
ate in other emergency situations, if
the vehicle experiences impacts sim-
ilar to those to which it is subjected in
a severe frontal impact or side crash.
Examples for ABS actuating situa-
tions (Fig. 17b):
– crash with stationary non-
deformable obstruction: air bag can
deploy at low speed;
– crash with non-fixed deformable
obstruction (for example, with anoth-
er vehicle): air bag deploys only at
high speed of the vehicle;
– in case of hard impact affecting
the vehicle in front, some examples
are shown in Figure 17b.
ABS does not work with:
– the ignition off;
– insufficient impact of frontal and
side crashes;
– roll over;
– side impacts
(in the design
variant
with no air bags) or rearward
impacts of the vehicle, that is in
cases where the system can
enhance to safety.
The degree of damage to the vehi-
cle body in a crash (or absence of
serious damage) is not always a sign
of normal or abnormal operation of
front air bags.
When the air bag deploys the dan-
ger of visibility restriction for the driv-
er is virtually absent, as the air bag is
filled and emptied in a short period of
time.
The air bag provides optimal pro-
tection if the seat, seat back and
head restraint are installed properly.
All the back should be borne on the
seat back and the seat should be
