The creation of the gray image is activated via
this menu item and configured within its three
setting masks.
Apart from the missing
Subsampling
setting in

Compression
screen, all
configuration items here
are identical to those of the
Color stream.
4.6.2.5.3. Bitonal
The creation of bitonal image is activated via
this menu item and configured within its setting
three masks.
The
General
and
Snipping
pages for bitonal images are largely identical to those for color images (see
chapter
). Howe-
ver, the control for the bi-
tonal image
Compression
has been added to the
Ge-
neral
settings page. Use
this control to switch bet-
ween CCITT G4 compressi-
on (
default
) and no com-
pression.
Binarization
: All controls
on this page are required
to fully parameterize the
dynamic binarization fun-
ction. However, the three
settings for
Brightness
,
Contrast
and
Outlining
having the biggest impact
on the underlying algo-
rithm. Generally speaking,
Brightness
refers to a th-
reshold value (
above which
a pixel is considered white
), whereas
Contrast
refers to the weighting of background versus foreground
information.
Outlining
will differentiate between filled areas and the borders surrounding them.
Below, please find a more detailed description of each of these settings: :
The
Brightness
setting will determine above
which grayscale level (0 – 255) a pixel is no lon-
ger considered black, but white. The default
value of 200 is an indication that usually, even
comparatively high grayscale values should be
interpreted as black.

will serve us as an example, you will notice, that
in the resulting bitonal image (
