Additional Information on Expanded Formats
As already indicated, hexadecimal numeration (
0-9
and
A-F
) can be used in most reporting formats to provide
more combinations than would otherwise be possible with
the 10 decimal (0-9) numbers.
NOTE: For greater familiarity with
hexadecimal
numbering, refer to
Appendix A.
If hexadecimal is used with
Standard
and
Expanded
Reporting,
the additional characters allow the Central
Station to handle a greater number of combinations – and
they need not be limited to alarm information. Repeated
below is the table (from page B-8) that suggests how 14 of
the 16 hexadecimal characters might be used as the
Event
Code
in the first round of an
Expanded Report.

NOTE 1: Even though
Expanded Reporting,
as described, generates two rounds of data, e.g.,
[1 2 3 4
1
1 1 1 1 8] before a message is considered valid, it will be displayed (and printed) as a
single line. Thus, like all the messages in the table at the right (although each was processed as
two rounds), the above message will be displayed and printed as [1 2 3 4 1 8].
NOTE 2: Although the
Event Codes
and the
Expanded Characters
used above and at the right represent
some common conventions, modern alarm control panels permit the programming of virtually
any combination to represent an alarm (or trouble, or advisory) condition. Central Stations often
exercise their discretion and specify, for the alarm installer who programs the equipment, how
they want these characters used.
NOTE 3: As shown at the right,
Event Code
F
is often used to specify a
System Trouble
. Among the many
possibilities covered by this category are the
loss of AC,
a
low standby battery,
and a
blown fuse.
Once again, Central Stations will specify the kinds of system troubles they wish to monitor and
which codes must be used to represent them.
