While each
format
provides data for the CP-220A to display
and print, several different communication
protocols
are
used to convey it to the Central Station. The list below
expands on the basic considerations that are used to form a
communications
protocol:

the frequency and duration of the
handshake
(acknowledgement) and
kissoff
(verification) tones (see
page B-1 and
Section 1,
page 1-2)
• how the data is encoded: does it use
pulses
or
tones
?
• the number of characters transmitted
• "digit-duration" (how long a digit of data "lasts"); and
"inter-digit" time (how long between digits)
• how the data is checked for accuracy (is the entire data
stream repeated and compared with the previous
transmission [double-round comparison], or does the
message carry
parity
information for checking during a
"single round"?)
• how many attempts will be made during a given phone
call to send the message accurately, before another
dialing attempt is conducted
