Operating
Notes
Automatic Mode/Manual Mode
Each CP-220A provides two distinct modes of operation: an
AUTOMATIC
and a
MANUAL
mode. When in the
Automatic Mode,
the CP-220A will
not
display the data it receives, but instead, will pass each message on to an
attached
Printer
and/or an
Automation System,
if they exist. The
Automatic
Mode
permits the CP-220A to operate at its maximum throughput.
In the
Manual
mode, the CP-220A buffers messages as they are received. If
operated in the
Manual
mode, the CP-220A
will
display the data it receives,
but requires operator intervention to "release" the displayed data so that
subsequent transmissions may be similarly presented. The
Manual
mode is
intended for use when neither a
printer
nor an
Automation System
is
available, and is designed to provide ample time for the operator to copy
down the displayed message.
The
AUTOMATIC
and
MANUAL
modes may be toggled back and forth
through the use of the
MANUAL/PREVIOUS
key on the front panel (see
page 1-9). An LED over the key lights whenever the
MANUAL
mode is
selected, and the display will briefly show [MANUAL] or [AUTOMATIC], as
the case may be. Depending on the way the CP-220A is programmed, a
short tone is produced in both modes whenever a message is received.
However, in the
MANUAL
mode, the tone will repeat every 60 seconds
when there are "stacked" messages that haven't yet been displayed and
must be attended to.
PARAMETER 40
(discussed on page 2-39), in its default mode
[AUTO
MODE
ENABLE ON], allows the CP-220A to stay in its
AUTOMATIC
mode only when a peripheral (
printer
and/or
Automation
System
) is connected and is operational. If the CP-220A finds that there are
no peripherals available (e.g., due to a peripheral malfunction), it will
return to its
MANUAL
mode. Only when the problem is corrected can the
CP-220A be placed in
AUTOMATIC
mode of operation (by pressing the
MANUAL/PREVIOUS
key).
If the CP-220A is
not
connected to a computer and/or printer, it will be
desirable to program
PARAMETER 40
to select [AUTO MODE ENABLE
OFF], which
prevents
the use of the
AUTOMATIC
mode (permitting only
MANUAL
mode operation). In this manner, messages received by the
CP-220A will be stored in the receiver's buffer until cleared by pressing the
NEXT
key.
Central Stations using
Automation Systems
universally operate the
CP-220A in its
Automatic
Mode
. As a result, the receiver neither stores nor
displays its incoming messages, but simply decodes and delivers them to
both the
Automation System
and the
Printer
, thus requiring no operator
intervention.
Additional information about many aspects of the CP-220A can be found in
the two
Appendices
that follow.
