Introduction

SpO2 monitoring may interfere with MRI operation.
NOTE: SpO2 and SPO2 are used interchangeably in this chapter.
SPO2 monitoring is a noninvasive technique used to measure the amount of
oxygenated hemoglobin and pulse rate by measuring the absorption of
selected wavelengths of light (functional saturation). The light generated in the
probe passes through the tissue and is converted into an electrical signal by
the photodetector in the probe. The monitor processes the electrical signal and
displays on the screen a waveform and digital values for SpO2 and pulse rate.
This chapter provides guidelines for successful SPO2 monitoring.
