Rear Cables (Fig. 70)
Removal
1. Place parking brake handle in released position.
2. Remove equalizer check nut and remove equalizer
clevis from front cable so as to remove tension on
rear cables.
3. Remove rear cable from equalizer assembly by re
moving cotter pin and clevis pin.
4. Remove “ U” shaped retainer from rear cable at
frame bracket. Pull cable out of bracket.
5. Remove rear brake drum as outlined in this section.
6. Remove rear brake shoes as outlined in this section.
7. Remove cable end from parking brake actuating
lever.
8. Compress ejqpanded conduit locking fingers at flange
plate entry hold and withdraw cable.
Installation
1. Pass end of cable and conduit tip through flange plate
entry hole, making sure that conduit locking fingers
all expand fully.
2. Connect cable end to actuating lever.
3. Install rear brake shoes, drum and wheel as outlined
in this section.
4. Pass cable through frame bracket and install “ U,;
shaped retainer.
5. Install cable end onto equalizer assembly with clevis,
pin and cotter pin.
6. Position equalizer clevis on front cable stud and
secure with check nut.
7. Adjust parking brake as outlined in this section.
Center Cable (Fig. 70)
Rem oval
1. Place parking brake lever in the fully released
position.
2. Remove equalizer check nuts and remove equalizer
from cable.
3. Remove three cable guides.
4. Disconnect c e n t e r cable from rear cables at
connectors.
Installation
1. Feed cable ends through holes in frame cross
member and install cable ends into rear cable
connectors.
2. Place cable through equalizer and install equalizer
onto front cable stud. Secure with check nut (do not
tighten).
3. Install three cable guides in proper position.
4. Adjust parking brake.
PARKING BRAKE-PROPELLER SHAFT
SINGLE SHOE TYPE (Fig. 71)
Brake Shoe
Removal
1. Remove adjusting nut and disengage link from opera
ting lever.
2. Loosen adjusting bolt locknut and back off adjusting
bolt until it clears the brake shoe web. Unhook
return spring from outer shoe.
3. Remove lock from outer shoe upper pivot pin and
slide shoe and operating lever assembly off pivot
pin and brake drum.
4. Place shoe and operating lever assembly on bench.
Remove lock rings securing brake shoes on operating
lever pins and remove shoes from pins.
Lining—Both Types
Replacement
1. Remove linings from shoes, using deliner punch in a
brake relining machine.
2. Clean all dirt and corrosion from shoes, using a
wire brush if necessary.
3. Install new linings on shoes, installing rivets in
center holes first. A .010 feeler must not enter
between lining and shoe at any point.
Brake Shoe
Installation
1. Install brake shoes on operating lever pins and
secure with lock rings.
2. Install shoe and operating lever assembly on brake
drum, with upper end of outer lever in place on pivot
pin. Install lock on pivot pin.
3. Insert link through operating lever, with washer and
spring in place on top of lever. Install adjusting nut
on link. Connect return spring to outer shoe.
