FOUR WHEEL DRIVE 3-28
tighten snug. Loosen nut 45° and assemble lock
washer by loosening nut to nearest hole, then
assemble outer nut.
Tighten nut to 40 ft. lbs.
minimum.
7. Install drive flange as follows:
a. On K10 models, install retainer and spring in hub
and install splined drive flange on shaft and into
hub.
b. On K20 models, install gasket on hub and install
drive flange on studs. Install lock washers and
nuts.
8. Install snap ring in axle shaft.
9. Install hub cap.
10. Fill knuckle with recommended lubricant. Coat plug
with Permatex No. 3 or equivalent and install in arm.
FRONT AXLE STEERING KNUCKLE
Removal
1. Remove axle shaft and joint assembly.
2. Disconnect steering connecting rod from steering
arm.
3. Disconnect the tie rod from steering knuckle.
4. Remove the seal retainers (2 pieces) from knuckle.
5. Remove the felt seal, rubber seal and the seal ring
from knuckle and let them hang on axle housing.
6. Remove upper and lower bearing retainers and shims
from knuckle.
7. Remove knuckle from housing and remove bearing
cones from axle housing.
NOTE:
On K20 HD models the upper kingpin
bearing consists of a cup and bushing assembly.
The kingpin and bushing are slotted to receive a
key which acts to connect the two components so
that they will pivot together. Remove procedure
for this installation is as listed above.
Bearing Cup
Replacement
If new bearings are to be installed, remove cups from
axle housing. Start new cups straight in counterbore and
using a suitable driver, press cups firm ly to bottom.
Seal
Replacement
If new seals and retainer are to be installed, hang them
on axle housing in place of old parts—felt seal inboard,
rubber seal next and the seal ring outboard.
Installation
1. Install bearing cones or bushing in cups in axle
housing.
2. Place the steering knuckle over axle housing yoke
and install bearing retainers. Use same shims re
moved, or equivalent amount and tighten bearing
retainer bolts or nuts to 25 ft. lbs. torque.
NOTE:
On K20 models position key in kingpin
and install in bushing by aligning kingpin and
key with key way in bushing.
3. Check bearing preload.
a. On 44-5F models—use a torque wrench positioned
in the tie rod hole; knuckle should turn with 5-10
lbs. pull. Add shim to decrease preload, remove
shim to increase preload.
Fig. 9—Access Cover and Adapter Assembly
b. On 44-5HDF models—use a torque wrench posi
tioned on upper bearing retainer nut; knuckle
should turn with 15-35 ft. lbs. torque. Adjust
preload by increasing or decreasing shim packs
at lower bearing only. Upper shim pack should
be .060 inch thick.
4. Position seal ring, rubber seal and felt seal against
inboard face of knuckle and align bolt holes. Install
steel retainer (2 pieces).
5. Connect the steering connecting rod and tie rod.
6. Install axle shaft assembly.
Transfer Case (Refer to Fig. 8)
Removal
1. Disconnect propeller shafts from
“ U”
joint yoke at
case.
2. Remove cotter pins from clevis pins. Withdraw
clevis pins to remove lever-selector from transfer
case.
3. Remove access cover on side of the Adapter Assem
bly and remove two attaching bolts to the transfer
case (fig. 9).
4. Remove seven bolts located on outside of Adapter
Assembly.
5. Support transfer case in suitable cradle.
6. Remove two bolts from bracket at right side of the
transfer case and remove case from adapter.
Adapter Assembly (4-Speed Transmission)
Removal
1. Remove bolts holding the bracket assembly, and
control lever to the adapter assembly, (fig. 1) Move
assembly to one side.
2. Remove two bolts from mounting assembly.
3. Place jack under transmission, raise transmission
in order to clear adapter from mounting.
4. Remove bolts connecting adapter to transmission and
remove adapter.
Installation
