Because the heater unit is electronically controlled, the
smoke tester is used only to check the unit. If the level of
soot in the exhaust gasses is unacceptable when the heater
unit is properly set, remove the Maxi-Heat from service and
have the heater unit repaired. DO NOT attempt to change
nozzles or modify the damper.
NOTICE
Tampering with the electronic control module could result in
damage to the heater unit and voiding of the machine war-
ranty. Always have a competent service person work on the
machine in the event repair or replacement of parts becomes
necessary.
To use the smoke tester:
1. Tear a strip of filter paper from the filter paper sheet.
2. Loosen the clamp screw at the sampling tube end of the
tester and insert the paper strip in the slot. Tighten the
clamp screw.
3. Release the sampling tube from the rubber barrel clip.
4. Insert the sampling tube at least 2.5 inches (65 mm) into
the chimney.
5. Pull the handle of the smoke tester through 10 full
strokes. Hold for several seconds at each end of each
pull stroke. On pull strokes, use a steady pull motion
such that the full stroke is completed in 3 to 4 seconds.
6. Remove the sampling tube from the chimney, loosen the
clamp screw and remove the filter paper.
7. Match the color of the smoke spot on the filter paper strip
to the closest spot on the 10 spot smoke scale. In com-
paring the color of the smoke spot to the smoke scale,
slide the filter paper strip between the back of the smoke
scale and the white plastic slide. View the smoke spot
on the filter paper through the window in the center of
the color spots on the smoke scale with the smoke spot
backed by the white plastic slide.
For further information on using the smoke tester, see the
Bacharach Instructions For True-Spot Smoke Tester.
Maintenance
General Maintenance
Before performing any maintenance procedures, see
“SAFETY”.
Scheduled maintenance prevents unexpected downtime,
reduces the number of accidents due to poor equipment per-
formance, and helps extend the life of the unit.
Proper maintenance and care of your heater and trailer is a
must for safe and reliable operation. Use the following main-
tenance and care guidelines, in addition to those scheduled
by your shop equipment maintenance schedule.
Where equipment is operated under severe conditions (very
dusty, extreme heat or cold, etc.), it should be serviced more
frequently.
Location Of Serial Number Plates
The serial number plate for the heater trailer is located on the
left side just ahead of the fender (A, Figure 43).
The serial number plate contains information the following
information:
• Month and Year machine was built.
• Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
• Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
• Tire Size
• Rim Size
• Cold Tire Inflation Pressure
• Serial Number
• VIN Number
• Vehicle Classification
