•
Use the
PORT SETUP
key to configure the four I/O ports
as required for any devices that you’ll interface to the 961,
and to enable Pulses Per Nautical Mile (PPNM). For more
technical information about these options, see the
North-
star 961 GPS Chart Navigator Installation Manual.
•
Use the
GPS STATUS
key to view a display of all available
satellites, including their signal strength and your
expected accuracy, as well as the frequency, baud rate,
and status of DGPS transmitters (961XD only). For more
information about viewing GPS and DGPS information,
see ”Viewing GPS status” starting on page 14-9.
•
Use the
DATABASES AND LOG
key to save or restore the
waypoints/routes and the user preferences (display, navi-
gation, chart, receiver, and port-setup options), and to
save log data when troubleshooting the 961 system. For
more information about using the
DATABASES AND
LOG
key, see ”Saving and restoring databases and system
logs” starting on page 14-10.
STEER key
The primary purpose of the
STEER
key is simple: Use it to
access either of two screens that help you steer precisely along
your desired track to your active waypoint. As you use them,
you’ll probably develop a preference for one or the other. Each
press of the
STEER
key retrieves one of two separate screens
as follows:
•
traditional steering indicator with numeric data
•
three-dimensional (3-D) graphical navigation with
numeric data
Whenever you press the
STEER
key, the 961 always returns to
the steering screen you were last using; press the
STEER
key
again to switch to the other screen.
Both steering screens use two menu keys—
STOP NAV
and
RESTART HERE
—to control steering functions:
•
Use the
STOP NAV/RESUME NAV
key to stop navigation
to a waypoint, or resume navigation when desired. “Stop-
ping” navigation means that the 961 turns off waypoint
messages and sequencing. For details about stopping nav-
igation, see ”Stopping navigation” starting on page 11-15.
