Starting and Driving

If the light stays on after the parking brake
is fully released, you m ay have a brake
problem .
D rive to the side o f the road and park off
the right-of-w ay.
You m ay n otice that the pedal is harder to
push or that it m ay go closer to the floor.
In eith er case, it w ill take longer to stop
the vehicle.
1. W ith the engine stopped, check the
brake fluid level im m ediately and add
fluid as required (page 8-15).
2. A fter adding fluid, check the light
again.
If the w arning lig h t rem ains on, o r if the
brakes do not operate properly, do not
drive the vehicle. H ave it tow ed to an
A uthorized M azda Dealer.
E ven if the light goes off, have y o u r brake
system inspected as soon as possible.

Brake W arning Light:
D rivin g w ith the brake system
w arn in g lig h t on is dangerous. It
indicates th a t y o u r brakes m ay not
w ork a t a ll o r th a t they cou ld
com pletely f a i l a t an y tim e. I f this
lig h t rem ain s on, have the brakes
in spected im m ediately. D o n ’t drive
w ith this lig h t on, a n d con tact an
A u th orized M azda D ea ler to have the
brakes in spected as soon as possible.

Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)
The A B S control unit continuously
m onitors the speed o f each w heel. If one
is about to lock up, the A B S resp o n d s by
autom atically releasing and reapplying
that w h e el’s brake.
T he driver w ill feel a slight vibration in
the b rake ped al and m ay hear a chattering
noise from the brake system . T his is
norm al w hen the A B S operates. D o n ’t
pum p the brakes, continue to press dow n
on the brake pedal.

AB S:
The A B S ca n n o t com pen sate f o r
un safe a n d reckless drivin g, excessive
speed, tailgatin g (follow ing a n oth er
veh icle too closely), a n d hydroplan in g
(redu ced tire fric tio n a n d ro a d
co n ta ct b ecau se o f w a ter on the road
su rface). You can still have an
acciden t. So d o n ’t rely on A B S a s a
su bstitu te f o r safe driving.
N O T E
B raking distances m ay b e longer on
lo o se surfaces (snow or gravel, for
exam ple) w hich usually have a hard
foundation. A vehicle w ith a norm al
braking system m ay require less
distance to stop under these conditions
because the tires w ill build up a w edge
o f surface layer w hen the w heels skid.
