SRS Air Bags
Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) Precautions
R ead this o w n er’s m anual carefully to verify w hat air bags (driver-side air bag, passenger-
side air bag, side air bags) are equipped in y o u r vehicle.
The front and side supplem ental restraint system s (SRS) include 4 air bags.
They are located in:
• T he steering w heel
• T he p assenger side dashboard
• T he outboard sides o f the front seatbacks
W ithout seat belt usage, the air bags cannot provide adequate protection during an
accident. Seat belt usag e is necessary to:
• K eep the passenger aw ay from an inflating air bag.
• R educe the possibility o f injuries during an accident that is not designed for air bag
inflation, such as roll-over or rear im pact.
• R educe the possibility o f injuries in frontal or side collisions that are not severe enough
to activate the air bags.
• R educe the possibility o f being throw n from y o u r vehicle.
• R educe the possibility o f injuries to low er body and legs during an accident because the
air bags provide no protection to these parts.
• H old the driver in a position w hich allow s better control o f the vehicle.
S m all children, those under 1 8 kg (40 lb), should b e protected by a child-restraint system
(page 2-18).
T hese system s operate independently depending on the type o f accident encountered; both
side air bags are not likely to deploy in the sam e accident b ecause a vehicle is not often hit
from both sides. T he front and side air bag system s w ill not norm ally deploy during the
sam e type o f accident unless a com bination o f frontal and side im pacts occur.
In a front-end o r side im pact, the air bag supplem ental restrain t system s are designed to
provide only supplem ental protection for the driver and front seat passenger. Seat belts
