In Case of an Em ergency
Overheating
Overheating
If the tem perature gauge indicates
overheating, you experience pow er loss,
o r y ou hear a loud knocking or pinging
noise, the engine is probably too hot.
If this h appens:
1. D rive safely to the side o f the road and
p ark o ff the right-of-w ay.
2. P ut a vehicle w ith an autom atic
transaxle in park (P), a m anual
transaxle in neutral.
A pply the parking brake.
3. Turn o ff the air conditioner.
& WARNING
Steam fro m O verheated Engine:
Steam fro m a n overh eated engine is
d a n g ero u s. T he escapin g steam cou ld
seriously burn y o u . O pen the hood
O N L Y a fter steam is no longer
escapin g fro m the en gine.
4. C heck w hether coolant or steam is
escaping from under the hood or from
the engine com partm ent.
I f ste a m is c o m in g fro m th e en g in e
c o m p a r tm e n t: D o n ’t go near the front
o f the vehicle. Stop the engine. Then
turn the ignition sw itch to the O N
position w ithout starting the engine.
T h e rad iato r cooling fans w ill start to
co o l the engine.
I f n e ith e r c o o la n t n o r ste a m is
e sc ap in g : O pen the hood and idle the
engine until it cools. If this d o e sn ’t
low er the tem perature, stop the engine
and let it cool.
5. C heck the coolant level.
If it’s low, look for leaks in the radiator
hoses and connections, heater hoses
and connections, radiator, and w ater
pum p.
If you find a leak or o ther dam age, or if
coolant is still leaking, stop the engine
and call an A uthorized M azda Dealer.
