Step 2. Unlock and remove the left-side cover (see “Removing the left-side cover” on page 182).
Step 3. See the documentation that comes with the adapter for any cabling instructions and information
about jumper or switch settings. (It might be easier for you to route cables before you install
the adapter.)
Step 4. Touch the static-protective package that contains the adapter to any unpainted metal surface on
the server; then, remove the adapter from the package.
Step 5. Remove the air baffle (see “Removing the air baffle” on page 188).
Step 6. Determine the PCI slot into which you will install the adapter.
Step 7. Press down the adapter-retention brackets to the open position.

Step 8. Remove the expansion slot cover, if installed. Keep the slot cover in a safe place for potential
future use.
Step 9. Press the adapter firmly into the expansion slot.
Attention: Incomplete insertion might cause damage to the system board or the adapter.
Step 10. Close the adapter-retention bracket.
Step 11. Connect the adapter cables (see “Internal cable routing and connectors” on page 33).
Step 12. Perform any configuration tasks that are required for the adapter.
Step 13. Reinstall the air baffle (see “Replacing the air baffle” on page 189).
Step 14. Install and lock the left-side cover (see “Installing the left-side cover” on page 183).
If you have replaced a server component or installed an optional device in the server, you need to reconnect
the power cords and all external cables, and turn on the server and peripheral devices.
