Appendix D KNK Force: Additional Information
D1 More about Z Origin
•
If you refer back to
Section 2.06.3
of the
C3 User Manual
, there is a table of different situations and whether
you use the top of the material or the top of the mat for setting the Z origin. The following information will
help you understand why it matters and how it affects depth settings.
D1.1 Why Do You Sometimes Set the Z Origin on the Mat versus the Material?
•
When cutting with a blade, it is recommended you use the top of the mat for setting the origin. If you use the
top of material instead, then
you’re more likely to introduce error and inconsistencies due to things like:
material not properly pressed down to the mat
tiny waste scraps on the mat, beneath the material
inconsistencies in the material itself
•
When cutting rolled materials without a cutting mat (such as vinyl or rhinestone template material), setting
the origin on top of the material will work well. These materials are not subject to the same issues as noted
above.
•
Currently, when cutting with a rotary tool, it is recommended that you use the top of the material for the
origin. You will need to know the thickness of the material so that you do not cut through it and into the mat.
Using the top of the material allows you to set a
Start Depth
lower than the
End Depth
and then work
through the material in passes, as needed.
•
When embossing, drawing, engraving, etc. with either the blade holder and when engraving with the rotary
tool, you need to use the top of the material for the origin since you are only trying to penetrate a portion of
the material. Otherwise, you would need to enter a negative
Cutting Depth
.
•
The piercer or punch tool is similar to cutting. You want to fully penetrate the material, thus setting the origin
on the mat is recommended.
D1.2 How does Setting the Origin on the Mat Affect the Settings?
•
For blade cutting, if you set the origin on top of the material instead of on top of the mat, you will need higher
Cutting Depth
settings. First, think about what
Z Origin
means. Remember that it’s defining a certain
height location to be 0:
•
Now, let’s assume that when the origin is set on the top of the mat, the
Cutting Depth
(CD)
required is 75
for that particular material.
That’s the
CD
required to get the blade tip to that location plus compensate for
the resistance of the material and the compression of the spring inside the blade holder. Instead, if you were
to set the origin on top of the material, then you need that same
CD
of 75, but then an additional amount of
CD
~ equal to the thickness of the material.
